Karpathos & Mythology

Karpathos, the second-largest island of the Dodecanese, is not only known for its wild beauty and unspoiled beaches but also for its deep connection to mythology.

According to ancient Greek tradition, Karpathos is considered the island of the Titans. It is said that after their defeat by the Olympian gods, the Titans found refuge in the island’s rugged mountains. In fact, Prometheus, the Titan who gifted fire to humanity, is believed to have visited Karpathos.

Additionally, Karpathos is mentioned in mythology as an island where Cronus, the father of Zeus, was particularly worshiped. Before Zeus seized power among the gods, the island’s inhabitants developed special rituals in honor of Cronus.

Beyond the Titans, Karpathos also played a significant role in the sea routes of gods and heroes. Some myths link the island to Poseidon, as its strategic location between Crete and Rhodes made it an essential point in the mythology of sea deities.

With its imposing landscapes and ancient traditions, Karpathos continues to inspire stories and myths, keeping alive the legacy of Greek mythology.
